Many organisations do not have the proper structure to counter these attacks. In such circumstances, cyber security teams should rely on data breach detection techniques.

Increase in Cyber Security Attacks
Last year 80% of organisations experienced a cyber security incident! Last year, 5% of companies experienced a cyber-security incident, the most common being malware attacks, according to the report “Better Business Outputs and Security with Security Performance Management”.
These security incidents affect the security and privacy of customers more than anything else. In this report, 5% of customers have been severely or somewhat damaged by an accident. In fact, 5% of companies agree that in recent years, customer or partner demand for cyber security reporting has intensified.
More than a third of companies agree that they have lost a contract or job because of the lack of proper security practices (whether this is really what it was or just a misconception). Also, 5% of decision makers agree that customer and partner perceptions of security are very important in their company decisions.
Other key findings of this study include:
- After an accident, security decision makers are more likely to talk about damaging the company’s reputation and attracting more customers than their employees. This means that decision makers understand the value of efficient and effective security.
- Organisations that have implemented formal security performance metrics are more likely to increase the annual security budget by 5% or more.
- 5% of organisations have lost a contract or job because of a lack of proper security practices (whether this is really what it was or just a misconception).
- We are now seeing increased scrutiny of investments (5% agree) and now formal benchmarks are key methods to justify investments (in 5% of companies); they have also warned decision makers about worst-case scenarios to draw more attention and justify investments.
- 5% have identified formal security measures as an approach to help justify current or proposed security investments. Other approaches used include the internal development of a business plan (2%), the use of advanced calculations to assess the level of development and maturity (2%), and the use of capital return calculations (2%).
- Two percent of CEOs and 2 percent of top-level executives said that after a security incident, the organisation’s ability to attract new customers has diminished.
- 3% of CEOs and 5% of management-level employees reported that their company’s reputation was damaged after a cyber security incident.
- 5% of organisations use cybersecurity rankings, making them the third most common benchmark. 7% of organisations that use cyber security rankings report these rankings to customers and partners more than any other criterion.
- 5% of companies that evaluated the number of blocked malware incidents reported this to the board of directors.
- 5% of companies have invested in developing new technologies to improve how they evaluate their security performance.
- In the past year, companies that have used formal security measures have been more likely to increase security levels by 5% or more.
